Sudeley Castle & Gardens Information

Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, Sudeley Castle & Gardens stands as a testament to over a millennium of English history. Home to Elizabeth, Lady Ashcombe, and the Dent-Brocklehurst family, this Tudor jewel offers visitors a captivating journey through time, complemented by breathtaking gardens and engaging exhibitions.

A Rich Historical Tapestry

Sudeley's origins trace back over 1,000 years, with its walls witnessing the reigns of numerous English monarchs. Notably, it is the only private castle in England to have a queen buried within its grounds—Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives. Visitors can explore the intimate 15th-century church where she lies entombed, reflecting the castle's deep-rooted royal connections.

Exquisite Gardens

The castle is surrounded by a 1,200-acre estate featuring ten award-winning gardens. The centerpiece is the Queens' Garden, named in honor of the four English queens—Anne Boleyn, Katherine Parr, Lady Jane Grey, and Elizabeth I—who once strolled its Tudor parterre. Each garden offers a unique experience, from the tranquility of the Secret Garden to the historic ambiance of the Tithe Barn Garden.

Engaging Exhibitions and Events

Sudeley Castle hosts a variety of exhibitions and events throughout the year, catering to all ages. Children can enjoy the Adventure Playground, featuring a wooden fort and zip wire, while the Animal Ark showcases life-sized animal sculptures crafted from natural materials. The castle's guides offer daily tours, including exclusive 'behind the castle walls' experiences, providing insights into the family's private apartments and the castle's storied past.

Visitor Amenities

Guests can savor locally sourced cuisine at two on-site cafés: the Old Coach House and Orangery, located on the terrace, and the Pavilion Café at the entrance/exit, offering relaxed dining options. The Pavilion Café is wheelchair accessible and pet-friendly, welcoming all visitors without the need for an admission ticket.
